About The Position

Alabama Clinical Schools provides therapy and treatment to males ages 9 to 18 in a relaxing campus setting for youth working through mental health disorders, behavioral issues, and sexually reactive behaviors. The facility offers 24-hour supervision, individualized care, and educational services with low student/teacher ratios, ensuring structured and holistic care. The campus includes semi-private bedrooms, unit group rooms, dining facilities, and spacious grounds within a secure facility. Alabama Clinical Schools has been a behavioral healthcare provider in the Birmingham area for over 20 years, offering services from intensive residential treatment to therapeutic foster care for males and females of all ages. Their RISE and Specialized Therapeutic Foster Care programs for boys are unique in Alabama. The mission is to enrich the lives of at-risk youth and their families by delivering quality behavioral and educational services while fostering a safe transition to the community. The Mental Health Associate provides direct care to residents with psychiatric disorders, ensuring their safety and well-being. MHAs are primarily responsible for resident safety on the unit, utilizing a therapeutic approach in all tasks, including assistance with daily activities, facilitation of groups, and other duties assigned by leadership.

Requirements

  • Detailed and organized with strong documentation skills
  • Able to safely monitor residents and perform physical management techniques and crisis intervention.
  • Must be 19 years or older
  • Must have a successful drug screen and background check (includes criminal history, Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, and ABI/FBI fingerprint check).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors or Associates degree in psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or other related mental health field preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in a residential mental/behavioral health setting strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to residents with psychiatric disorders, to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Ensures the resident’s safety on the unit utilizing a therapeutic approach to all tasks including assistance with daily activities, facilitation of groups and other duties as assigned by Group Leader, Assistant Group Leader, or Shift Supervisor.
