About The Position

The Men's Wellness & Safety Attendant plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all residents and staff within IRC’s THARP facility. This position is part of the frontline care team and reports directly to the Coordinator, Inuvik THARP, under the leadership of the Community Wellness Program Manager. This is a residential-based position focused on maintaining safety, security, and support within a therapeutic housing setting. Relevant experience may include work in shelters, group homes, reception, public or community-based environments where interpersonal awareness, a calm presence, and respectful engagement are essential.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a shelter, group home, residential, or community wellness setting preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and WHMIS (or willingness to obtain).
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and harm-reduction principles.
  • Strong interpersonal, observational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during high-stress situations.
  • Sound judgment, dependability, and personal integrity.
  • Good written and verbal communication for documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
  • Requires mobility for rounds, ability to respond quickly to emergencies, light physical work, physically able to lift and transport program supplies and equipment (up to 30 lbs) in support of daily operations and activities.
  • Must identify as male (bona fide occupational requirement).

  • Experience working with Indigenous populations and knowledge of Inuvialuit culture is a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a secure, trauma-informed environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Conduct regular facility safety rounds, door and curfew checks, and ensure all exits remain secure.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, or safety incidents.
  • Apply non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques when needed.
  • Record all incidents and observations in the shift log and incident reports.
  • Monitor and enforce resident and visitor rules while promoting dignity and respect.
  • Provide general support and encouragement to residents consistent with individual care plans.
  • Facilitate or supervised culturally grounded men’s programming
  • Assist residents with basic needs (e.g., meals, laundry, cleaning, daily routines).
  • Support resident orientation to facility expectations, curfews, and community guidelines.
  • Observe and report behavioural, emotional, or health changes to the Coordinator or Manager.
  • Promote cultural and wellness-based activities in collaboration with the program team.
  • Perform cleaning and light maintenance tasks to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Monitor supplies and report shortages or maintenance issues promptly.
  • Assist in food service, laundry, and facility readiness during shift transitions.
  • Ensure compliance with WSCC safety protocols and IRC’s internal safety policies.
  • Maintain clear and detailed shift logs, incident reports, and resident observations.
  • Communicate effectively with team members during shift changes.
  • Participate in daily debriefings and contribute to a collaborative, respectful work environment.
  • Adhere to IRC HR Policies, including overtime, standby & callback Pay
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident and organizational information.
  • Follow IRC’s Alcohol, Cannabis, and Drug-Free Environment Policy.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in all interactions.
