About The Position

Under general supervision of the Memorial Services & Cemeteries Manager, performs a variety of customer service and custodial maintenance activities in various Community facilities and Memorial services buildings (Salt River and Lehi). This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and is subject to working daytime, nights, overnights, holidays and weekend hours. The Memorial Services Assistant differs from the Custodian job class by the need to work independently, ensure all areas within the Memorial Hall and Xalychidom Piipaash Nyvaash facilities are thoroughly cleaned before, during, and after each memorial service. The job further differs by the need to assist grieving family members during services, usher disruptive children during services back to their parents, and being able to work around deceased members.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED and one (1) year custodian experience.
  • Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • Ability to move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders or steps, and bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
  • Ability to use and work safely with cleaning chemicals and solvents.
  • Ability to provide friendly customer service in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work around deceased bodies.
  • Ability to deal with stress and difficult situations involving grief stricken family members.
  • Ability to provide First Aid and CPR as needed.
  • Must be willing to work day time, night, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and tradition of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of tribal traditional and other religious denomination funeral, wakes, burial, customs and ceremonies.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment including buffers, burnishers, wet and dry vacuums and supplies used for cleaning work.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance methods and practices, including floor stripping and waxing.
  • Knowledge of general custodial building maintenance methods and practices.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of general cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, extraction, cleaning carpets, scrubbing, and mopping floors, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors, washing windows and equipment, dusting and polishing furniture, and cleaning/sanitizing restroom facilities.
  • Mixes cleaning chemicals and solvents necessary to perform cleaning activities as instructed and trained.
  • Maintains an inventory of cleaning equipment, tools, supplies, and materials at the assigned work location. Notifies Manager in a timely manner to reorder equipment, tools, supplies and materials as needed.
  • During wake and funeral services, performs regular spot checks throughout memorial services facilities (restrooms, kitchen, dining room, sanctuary, family room). Cleans up spills, messes, and services and stocks restrooms as needed.
  • Assists family members during regular and overnight traditional services by answering questions or notifying appropriate staff to help resolve issues that may arise during services.
  • Assists and oversees day labor on duty and gives work assignments as needed.
  • Picks up and delivers items for other custodial staff, including supplies and materials as needed. Assists in cleaning other facilities as assigned.
  • Performs other job-related duties that enhance and facilitate departmental operations.
