Member of Technical Staff, Envoy Response

Envoy•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Envoy’s Response team builds technology that helps organizations protect people, stay ahead of emerging threats, and communicate effectively during critical situations. This backend-focused fullstack role works on the Threat Intelligence platform, which processes real-time signals from many sources, uses AI to identify and enrich relevant threats, and helps organizations understand risks to people and workplaces. The role also contributes to the Emergency Notifications platform, which enables organizations to send critical communications quickly and reliably across multiple channels. The engineer will design and scale services, distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, APIs, and data models, while also building customer-facing experiences with React and TypeScript. The position involves technical architecture, end-to-end product ownership, production operations, and close collaboration with Product, Design, and Engineering. Reliability, performance, scalability, and engineering simplicity are central to the work, which can directly affect people's safety. This is an on-site position requiring four days per week, Monday through Thursday, at Envoy’s San Francisco headquarters. The posting describes this as an L3 opportunity and says successful candidates often come from senior engineering roles, with experience leading complex projects, mentoring peers, and making architectural contributions across teams.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • At least 7 years of experience building and operating production software, with strong backend expertise and experience across the full stack.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and experience building backend services with a language such as Kotlin or Java.
  • Experience designing scalable distributed systems, microservices, and APIs, with a solid understanding of system architecture and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Postgres, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance considerations.
  • Experience with asynchronous processing, event-driven architectures, or messaging systems such as Kafka.
  • Working proficiency with React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, and ability to independently build and ship frontend features.
  • Strong product mindset and ability to balance technical excellence with customer value.
  • Experience independently driving technical projects, navigating ambiguity, and collaborating across Engineering, Product, and Design.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building AI-powered applications or integrating LLMs into production systems.
  • Experience with high-throughput data pipelines, stream processing, or search technologies such as OpenSearch.
  • Experience with geospatial data, real-time alerting, or mission-critical communication systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build and scale real-time threat intelligence systems that ingest, process, classify, and enrich signals from numerous data sources.
  • Solve distributed systems problems, including high-throughput event processing, data deduplication, and reliable asynchronous workflows.
  • Apply AI to identify relevant threats, reduce noise, and deliver actionable insights.
  • Build and evolve emergency notification systems that reliably deliver critical communications across channels such as SMS, email, mobile push, and Slack.
  • Design, build, and operate scalable backend services, APIs, and data models using technologies such as Kotlin, Kafka, Postgres, AWS, and OpenSearch.
  • Build performant customer-facing experiences using React and TypeScript, owning features across the full stack.
  • Drive technical design and architecture decisions while balancing scalability, reliability, performance, and engineering simplicity.
  • Own features and systems end-to-end, from design and implementation through production operations, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering teams to turn complex customer problems into effective solutions.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical mentorship, and improvements to engineering practices.
