Member of Technical Staff (Android Engineer, Computer Growth)

Perplexity•San Francisco, CA
•$220,000 - $405,000

About The Position

As an Android growth engineer at Perplexity, you will work across the mobile funnel for Perplexity, Comet, and Computer on Android, including install, activation, onboarding, lifecycle messaging, conversion, retention, and in-app purchases. The Growth team builds product loops that help users discover, adopt, and build lasting habits around Perplexity’s AI experiences. You will own projects end-to-end, from identifying opportunities and designing solutions to implementation, experimentation, analysis, and rollout. This includes rebuilding onboarding through experiments, integrating purchase and paywall surfaces with billing systems, developing useful notification experiences, and improving app-store discovery and deep-link adoption. You will work quickly across multiple experiments while accounting for mobile release cycles, store review, and version fragmentation. The role sits close to the core product, translating behavioral signals, model outputs, and experimentation into durable product experiences for consumer and enterprise workflows. You will partner with Product, Design, Data Science, Monetization, Marketing, the core Mobile team, and web and design engineers. Perplexity emphasizes craftsmanship, ownership, entrepreneurship, scholarship, and partnership.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional mobile engineering experience shipping consumer apps at meaningful scale on Android.
  • Strong native Android skills, including Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and willingness to work in other parts of the stack when needed.
  • Experience owning a full release cycle, including build and release tooling, phased rollouts, store review, crash and regression monitoring, and safe rollbacks.
  • Ability to execute and deliver multiple experiments and product improvements in parallel, driving them to clear outcomes.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing and experimentation platforms, such as Eppo, Statsig, Optimizely, or in-house equivalents, especially in versioned apps.
  • Comfort making data-informed decisions, including pulling, segmenting, and interpreting funnel data.
  • Strong product judgment and ability to translate user behavior and growth opportunities into simple, effective technical solutions.
  • Self-motivation and strong ownership, including proposing experiments, shipping features ahead of schedule, and driving improvements independently.
  • Genuine interest in and adoption of AI products, with willingness to learn quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience on a growth or experimentation-heavy team.
  • Deep experience with in-app payments.
  • Experience with mobile attribution and measurement stacks such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, or Branch, and paid mobile acquisition.
  • App Store Optimization experience, including store listing experiments and localized metadata.
  • Comfort working in backend or web stacks to unblock end-to-end delivery.
  • Experience at a fast-growing startup or on a high-ownership engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own Android growth surfaces across the funnel, including install, activation, onboarding, lifecycle, conversion, retention, and paid upgrades.
  • Lead experiments end-to-end, from hypothesis and instrumentation through implementation, analysis, and rollout, while shipping multiple experiments in parallel.
  • Build flag-driven and server-driven patterns that enable testing without waiting for an app-store release.
  • Own in-app purchase and paywall surfaces, including billing integrations, subscription and credit purchase flows, entitlement correctness, and pricing and packaging experiments.
  • Build push and lifecycle notification experiences, including permission prompts, targeting, timing, deep links, and instrumentation to evaluate retention impact.
  • Partner with web and design engineers to make onboarding, upsells, and in-task nudges consistent across web, iOS, and Android.
  • Partner with the Growth team to improve app-store performance and attribution.
  • Optimize install-to-activation, D1/D7/D30 retention, notification opt-in and engagement, paid conversion, and habit formation using clean data and trustworthy experiment readouts.
  • Work with Product, Design, Data Science, Monetization, Marketing, and the core Mobile team to turn behavioral signals into durable product surfaces.
