About The Position

The Member of Technical Staff, Science will advance the company’s mission to improve humanity’s ability to engineer biology by improving the application of AI to biology across basic research, drug discovery, and biosecurity. The role turns deep understanding of a biological domain into a roadmap of benchmarks, designs those benchmarks with engineers, and builds and manages a scientific team using internal talent infrastructure and professional networks. This is a high-intensity, founder-type position. The team works in person in Mission Bay, San Francisco, keeps meetings to a minimum, and offers flexibility around arrival and departure times. Tight deadlines and customer commitments may require late hours. Frontier AI labs use the company’s benchmarks to assess biological capabilities and safeguards, and the work is featured in research announcements and model cards.

Requirements

Deep scientific expertise and experience using AI tools, or strong coursework in mathematics or computer science and experience working with scientists.

Responsibilities

Design benchmarks with engineers and scientists, from selecting scientific questions and datasets through developing reliable graders.
Work with engineers on large-scale computing and AI inference infrastructure to evaluate models and investigate their failures.
Research methods for evaluating scientific capabilities and measuring improvements from training.
Work with internal data generation and drug development teams to build tasks around real experiments and research decisions.
Build and manage a scientific team using professional networks and internal talent infrastructure.
