Member of Staff

Wafer•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Wafer is building AI systems that automatically optimize inference workloads across silicon. The Member of Staff connects compute technologies and economics, assessing how GPU architecture, supplier contracts, and financial models inform business decisions. Working with engineering, finance, and suppliers, this person helps determine which models and hardware configurations are profitable and how to make effective capacity decisions as demand and hardware economics change. The role is based on-site in San Francisco five days a week, on a small team with broad ownership and autonomy.

Requirements

  • Understand compute beyond specifications and be able to explain how GPU architecture, memory, networking, and software affect the cost of serving a real workload.
  • Demonstrate exceptional numerical ability, including building clear financial models, challenging assumptions, and explaining the difference between profit and cash.
  • Have roughly 1–5 years of relevant experience.
  • Be credible with engineers and commercially sharp with suppliers; ask precise questions and follow details through to a decision.
  • Be able to work without a detailed specification, investigate an ambiguous problem, identify relevant information, and deliver a concrete answer.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in compute infrastructure, semiconductors, finance, or investing.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering and finance to assess which models and hardware configurations are profitable and what factors affect profitability.
  • Build models that connect inference performance, utilization, pricing, compute costs, and cash requirements.
  • Evaluate GPU supply and supplier proposals, comparing price, availability, contract length, deposits, reliability, and flexibility.
  • Help source and negotiate compute capacity, then track whether delivery and performance meet agreed terms.
  • Translate changing demand and hardware economics into concrete capacity decisions.
  • Investigate discrepancies across usage, invoices, and contracts, and build systems to keep those numbers reliable.

Benefits

  • Fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Daily lunch and dinner.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Parental leave.
  • $1,000 per month post-tax housing stipend for employees who live within walking distance (0.5 miles) of the office.
  • Covered Uber or Waymo rides to and from the office.
  • Visa sponsorship available.
