About The Position

Under the supervision of the Melt Supervisor, the Melt Utility performs various tasks within the Melt Department to ensure the timely and proper production of molten iron. Requirements

  • Approach work assignments in a positive manner and function as a team member.
  • Requires decimals and fractions, drawings and formulas, adjustable measuring instruments.
  • Some judgment to comply with instructions, follow methods, make minor decisions with continuous mental or visual attention.
  • Moderate physical exertion.
  • Able to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Physical movement includes repetitive motion, with twisting, bending, and standing for most of shift.
  • Must be willing and able to wear all required PPE. (Safety goggles, hearing protections, steel-toe non-slip safety shoes, and gloves as needed when on the shop floor.)

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment used in Melt Department including cupola/furnace, holding furnaces, desulfurizing vessel, converters, cranes and any equipment that is essential to normal operations.
  • Operate fork truck by following all processes and procedures related to its safe operation.
  • Assist Melter with operations, operational maintenance, deslagging, and with relining, repair, shaving, and startup of furnaces.
  • Assist with the operation of electric furnaces and cupola to melt iron and scrap, alloys, and other additives to the proper temperature, composition, chemistry to ensure quality molten product.
  • Assist in or perform refractory repairs on furnace, ladles, spouts, etc.
  • Inspect equipment and cupola and furnace lining regularly.
  • Maintain melt written records as necessary and secure proper tools for each task.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Utilize delay time constructively by doing housekeeping or other area improvement activities.
  • Assist in training new melt employees and cover various positions throughout the Melt Department to cover for breaks, illnesses, vacations, etc.
  • Participate in area continuous improvement efforts including Employee Involvement activities.
  • Maintain personal attendance record in compliance with company guidelines.
  • Able to work overtime as assigned.
