About The Position

Marion County Public Works is hiring a Medium Equipment Operator for its Road & Bridge Operations Division. The position primarily joins the Road Operations Signs/Pavement Markings crew and participates in litter and nuisance control, Adopt-a-Road activities, and the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and traffic control devices. The operator may also assist other work groups with roadway features including pavement and drainage, bridges and guardrails, roadside vegetation, and snow and ice response. Work may take place at alternative locations and schedules. The role operates medium road-maintenance equipment and performs moderately complex equipment-operation work for road, bridge, vegetation, sign-making, drainage, ferry, nuisance-control, environmental-site, landfill, and transfer-station maintenance or construction. The operator performs tasks of lower-level classifications in the job series and may occasionally provide lead direction to a small crew, but does not supervise employees. The position reports to a supervisor or lead worker, who assigns work and reviews performance. This is an essential, safety-sensitive position that works in the field and in inclement weather. It may support storm response and recovery, emergency operations, and hazardous-material cleanup within the employee’s training. Emergency duties can involve long hours outside normal business hours, weekends or holidays, and little or no advance notice. The position is full-time and eligible for overtime. Typical schedules are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in winter and Monday–Thursday, 7:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. in summer. Rotating shifts, flexible schedules, and long hours may be required; construction-season and winter-weather work may be especially demanding. Candidates need a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant equipment-operation and semi-skilled manual-task experience, or a satisfactory combination of relevant work, education, training, or experience. A current driver’s license and CDL permit with medical card are required at hire. The employee must possess or obtain an Oregon CDL-A with tanker endorsement within six months of hire after successful completion of provided training. Other certification and training deadlines apply, including flagger certification, forklift certification, and FEMA ICS/NIMS IS-100/700 training. The position requires strenuous manual work and the ability to lift and carry heavy loads, work near traffic and in adverse conditions, and pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
