Medium Equipment Operator

About The Position

Under general supervision, the Medium Equipment Operator operates equipment and vehicles used to maintain canals, storm drains, roads, and rights-of-way. The position involves making several decisions weekly that require interpretation and judgment. It has little or no public contact and no supervisory responsibilities. The role has no responsibility for reports or records. The operator performs related duties as required. Some unusual, irregular, or shifting work hours may apply, and occasional travel may be involved. Work may expose the employee to hazards that could result in serious injury or death and may take place in extreme outdoor conditions. The job description states that the work requires little physical effort, little movement, and infrequent lifting of more than 5–15 pounds.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent; applicants who do not have one at employment must be given an opportunity to acquire it within nine months.
Approximately 1 to 2 years of employment experience in a related field, which may be supplemented by some special schooling in the field.
Sufficient subject knowledge to perform effectively with little supervision in varied work situations or situations involving deviations and irregularities.
Sufficient field knowledge to perform most normal assigned work with little supervisory direction.
Valid Texas Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

Operate one or more of the following: front end loader, backhoe, commercial mower, water tanker truck, and dump truck.
Clean canals and storm drains.
Clear rights-of-way for roads and canals.
Grade dirt streets and prepare them for paving.
Repair road shoulders.
Drive dump trucks to pick up and deliver materials, debris, and supplies.
Service vehicles with oil, gas, water, and grease.
Notify a mechanic when repairs are needed.
Pick up litter manually and with heavy equipment.
Perform related duties as required.
