About The Position

The Department of the Medical Examiner is seeking to fill a Medicolegal Investigator I position in Honolulu. As a Medicolegal Investigator I, you will play a vital role in investigating deaths that are accidental, unexplained, or unattended, helping to uncover the facts and provide answers to families and the community. Requirements

  • Citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.
  • Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.
  • Current, valid appropriate driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with medicolegal investigations of deaths by gathering evidence, obtaining records, interviewing witnesses, and documenting investigative findings.
  • Assist with identifying decedents and notifying next of kin, while providing information and support to families and coordinating with funeral homes, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies.
  • Manage case information, reports, evidence, and decedent property, ensuring accurate documentation, proper safeguarding, and authorized disposition.
  • Review death-related information and questionable causes or manners of death to assist in determining whether further investigation is warranted.
  • Participate in emergency operations, disaster response, and mass-fatality incidents, while maintaining required training and professional relationships with families and community partners.
