About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) Temporary Solutions. The position is located at 4312 District Drive, Raleigh - Wake County with the Department of Health and Human Services. The role involves conducting investigations, examinations, and reports of sudden, unexpected, unnatural, or violent deaths within the Medical Examiner jurisdiction. It also involves determining the OCME's jurisdiction over these cases and completing all work related to death investigations as required. ME Specialists' duties involve receiving calls from MEs, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies reporting deaths. The role requires awareness of hazards associated with scene investigations. External examinations of decedents include photographing the body, collecting toxicology samples, physically moving the decedent, and removing personal belongings. The position may also involve collecting and releasing physical evidence to law enforcement, preparing detailed written investigation reports, and possessing knowledge of medical terminology and data entry. Proficiency with current office technology, effective communication with agencies and families during stressful situations, and the ability to lift medium to heavy weights or hike long distances in outdoor and rural environments are also required. The office requires coverage from Sunday to Saturday, 24/7, mainly during nights and weekends, and may include working on holidays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science (biology, chemistry, nursing, anthropology, forensic sciences, biochemistry, or related sciences field), or criminal justice from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medicolegal death investigation experience or specialized (e.g., unidentified decedent, etc.) experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and awareness of hazards associated with scene investigations
