About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Office of State Human Resources, Temporary Solutions division. The position is located at 4312 District Drive, Raleigh, NC - Wake County with the Department of Health and Human Services. Temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time and are not offered leave or retirement benefits. However, temporary employees working an average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This role serves as the Lead Medicolegal Death Investigator I, conducting investigations, examinations, and reports of sudden, unexpected, unnatural, or violent deaths within the Medical Examiner jurisdiction. The position requires determining the OCME's jurisdiction over cases and completing all work related to death investigations as required for ME Specialists. The role involves receiving calls from MEs, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies reporting deaths. The office requires coverage from Sunday to Saturday, 24/7, mainly during nights and weekends, and may include working on holidays. Assist supervisors as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science (biology, chemistry, nursing, anthropology, forensic sciences, biochemistry, or related sciences field), or criminal justice from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medicolegal death investigation experience or specialized (e.g., unidentified decedent, etc.) experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and awareness of hazards associated with scene investigations
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and data entry
  • Proficient with current office technology
  • Lift medium to heavy weights or hike long distances in outdoor and rural environments

Responsibilities

  • Conducting investigations, examinations, and reports of sudden, unexpected, unnatural, or violent deaths within the Medical Examiner jurisdiction
  • Determining the OCME's jurisdiction over these cases
  • Completing all work related to death investigations as required ME Specialists' duties
  • Receiving calls from MEs, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies reporting deaths
  • External examinations of decedents include photographing the body, collecting toxicology samples, physically moving the decedent, and removing personal belongings
  • Collect and release physical evidence to law enforcement
  • Prepare detailed written investigation reports
  • Communicate effectively with agencies and families during stressful situations
  • Assist supervisors as needed
