About The Position

The Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) assists Residents with Medication Administration & treatments under the direction of the RN. The CMA is responsible for providing personal care to Assisted Living Program participants residing in publicly-subsidized housing complexes. The CMA administers medications and wound care under the supervision of the RN. The CMA also aids with ADLs, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of resident apartments and laundry. The CMA may also schedule transportation and medical appointments for residents as needed. This role acts as a shift lead, ensuring CHHAs and CNAs document properly and follow through on communications. The CMA supervises CHHAs and CNAs to ensure implementation of the resident care plan/service plan.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate or Certificate Home Health Aide Certificate
  • 1 year of CNA/CHHA experience
  • Successful completion of medication administration training course & statewide standardized, written competency test.
  • NJ Medication Aide certification.
  • AHA Heartsaver CPR AED (must obtain before end of orientation period if not currently held).
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Possess a friendly and caring demeanor.
  • Has excellent bedside manner.
  • Training in multiple age populations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  • Good critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Residents with Medication Administration & treatments under the direction of the RN.
  • Provides personal care to Assisted Living Program participants.
  • Administers medications and wound care under the supervision of the RN.
  • Aids with ADLs, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and maintaining resident apartments and laundry.
  • Schedules transportation and medical appointments for residents as needed.
  • Acts as shift lead, ensuring proper documentation and follow-through on communications.
  • Supervises CHHAs and CNAs to ensure implementation of resident care plan/service plan.
  • Maintains a working relationship with LPN, RN, DON, Administrator, and other staff.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with all residents.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements for medication administration.
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident, ALP operations, and personnel information.
  • Maintains residents' privacy and dignity.
  • Encourages residents' independence.
  • Understands fire, emergency, and safety procedures.
  • Adheres to policies, procedures, and standards regarding infection control.
  • Understands hazards and safety of oxygen use.
  • Checks phone messages and returns calls.
  • Reviews faxes and faxes orders to MDs, Pharmacy, etc.
  • Reads communication book & daily logbooks and addresses concerns.
  • Checks residents scheduled for appointments and ensures progress notes are prepared.
  • Reviews Narcotic count.
  • Assists residents with medication administration following proper techniques.
  • Demonstrates the FIVE RIGHTS of medication administration and Safe Medication Practices.
  • Maintains frequent close communication with the RN.
  • Identifies medication and residents before administering medication.
  • Documents on MARs when medication has or has not been given.
  • Notifies LPN/RN if resident not given or refuses medication.
  • Notifies LPN/RN immediately if medication error has occurred and documents appropriately.
  • Checks all meds daily and calls pharmacy for needed refills.
  • Administers medications including pre-filled insulin pens as per MD orders.
  • Monitors and documents Glucose levels.
  • Monitors and provides wound care as delegated by RN.
  • Receives medications from pharmacy and documents delivery.
  • Provides AM & PM personal care to assigned residents including bath, oral hygiene, hair care, incontinence care.
  • Provides ostomy care.
  • Takes weights and vital signs (TPR & BP) monthly & as requested, records and reports to nurse.
  • Provides ambulation assistance as needed.
  • Assists with transfer to & from bed.
  • Reports any change in resident status to nurse immediately.
  • Responds to emergency calls & assists nurse as needed.
  • Reports any accidents, injuries, or complaints to nurse or administration immediately.
  • Delivers supplies and equipment to residents.
  • Provides light housekeeping.
  • Cleans refrigerator, stove/oven, cabinets and silverware drawers as needed.
  • Vacuums and dusts as needed.
  • Assists with laundry: washing, drying, folding, and putting away.
  • Strips and remakes bed as needed but at least 1x/week.
  • Cleans the bathroom including floor, vanity, toilet, and shower/tub.
  • Removes trash from resident apartments daily.
  • Assists resident with meal service as needed (meal preparation, cutting up foods, set-up, clearing, washing dishes).
  • Reports any unsafe equipment to nurse/administrator.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the wellness office, laundry room, equipment, and inventory supplies.
  • Removes trash from wellness offices and laundry rooms.
  • Abides by established guidelines of the facility and governing regulations.
  • Performs other responsibilities outlined in the Certified Home Health Aide job description or deemed necessary by the administrator.
