About The Position

As a Medical Technologist with VCH you will: Be responsible to provide technical leadership and expertise in the provisioning of Laboratory and Diagnostic Services for the Central Coast (Bella Coola/Bella Bella). Participate in the planning and coordination of services; monitors the quality of technical work performed to ensure departmental standards are met and safety procedures are followed. Schedule staff activities and participates in recruitment and performance management; trains and coaches team members. Facilitate workplace solutions and the implementation of new techniques and procedures. Perform a variety of routine/complex tests utilizing manual and automated procedures/instruments, when required. Supervise designated staff. Requirements

  • Certified by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Bachelor of Science degree or an Advanced Registered certificate or completion of a supervisory/management program plus a minimum of five (5) years’ recent, related experience including two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Regular travel within the Central Coast is required. Expenses will be reimbursed as per the Collective Agreement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and recent related experience in related discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technologists established by the CSMLS and/or other relevant national professional associations.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member, leader and facilitator.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, medical personnel and other health care staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment and to organize and prioritize competing demands
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and deal with others effectively in a supportive and positive manner.

  • Basic knowledge of computerized systems relating to the laboratory.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the laboratory.
