About The Position

The Medical Technologist II (Cytology Supervisor) supervises subordinate technologists, technicians, aides and assistants performing a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature. In this capacity, they ensure efficient, accurate and timely reporting of results of tests and examinations. The Medical Technologist II Cytology Supervisor also performs routine complex tests which involve delicate and exacting steps requiring measured judgment as to the appropriate procedures to be employed. Such testing may be performed by manual methods involving technical interpretation and by automated analyzers involving maintenance and troubleshooting. They may also assist with the instructing of laboratory personnel, and laboratory and medical students. The Medical Technologist II Cytology Supervisor also is responsible for all quality control/quality assurance activities in Cytology, preventative maintenance, monitoring of supplies, implementation of testing brought into the Cytology laboratory, and any other duties assigned by the Anatomical Pathology Manager.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1461.
  • Bachelor's degree in Science that meets CLIA requirements to perform high complexity testing.

  • Must meet educational requirements set forth by CLIA88, Subpart M. 493.1483.
  • Must be familiar with and maintain compliance with the College of American Pathologists accreditation and CLIA 88 requirements for the Cytology laboratory
  • Completion of a Baccalaureate Degree and graduate from an U.S. accredited (CAAHEP) program in Cytotechnology and at least three years of screening experience and two years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Completion of a supervisory training course is highly recommended.
  • ThinPrep Certified by Hologic LP or a designee and Imaged ThinPrep Certification preferred.
  • Work requires a complete understanding of the theoretical applications in all aspects of cytodiagnosis, including gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and aspiration biopsy cytology.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of all aspects of cytopreparation including routine and special stains, fixatives and procedures.
  • Ability to examine a slide and concentrate for long periods of time utilizing a microscope and physical ability to perform continual microscopic examinations and have normal color perception.
  • Ability to make accurate observations and a diagnosis.
  • Must have knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimen material of patient origin, so as not to contaminate self, coworkers or the work area.
  • Must have knowledge of the importance of appropriate waste handling and disposal.
  • Must understand the applications and purpose of laboratory quality assurance programs and procedures.
  • Must be able to identify personnel problems and have knowledge of the University's Civil Service Policies and Rules for Non-academic Personnel, in executing progressive discipline.
  • Must be able to maintain productive communication with peers, superiors, health care staff and visitors.
  • Must understand the function of the medical laboratories in the health care environment.
  • Must have knowledge of the importance of the flexibility necessary for work performance within the laboratory setting and the importance of a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Work requires a complete understanding of the theoretical applications in all aspects of Cytology.
  • Ability to independently plan and complete work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex microscopic evaluations according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assist other cytotechnologists with issues that may occur, providing troubleshooting expertise and quality control/assurance guidance.
  • Independently perform Adequacy Assessment of Imaged-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration, with Fellow/Resident and or Faculty backup.
  • Ensure continuous workflow of the laboratory by working closely with the cytotechnologists through verbal communications.
  • Review tests results before reporting, using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify result validity and clinical relevance; consult with Medical Director prior to the release of results when results are unusual or unanticipated.
  • Coordinate and participate in R&D projects
  • Prepare, review and update laboratory procedure manuals.
  • Work cooperatively to prepare for inspections and surveys related to accreditation requirements
  • Write new procedures as new testing is introduced into the Cytology Laboratory.
  • Prepare and conduct Performance Management (PMS) reviews.
  • Pass the annual CLIA mandated Cytology Proficiency testing.
  • Institute employee discipline and counseling.
  • Assist in employee recruitment and interview process.
  • Prepare staffing schedules.
  • Conduct periodic staff meetings.
  • Coordinate training of personnel, complete training checklists and complete competency evaluation.
  • Interact with physicians, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person, in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Maintain quality control checks in the cytopreparatory area.
  • Use the laboratory information systems to perform basic resulting, lookup, and billing functions of patient results through the Hospital/Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Use information systems down time procedures
  • Coordinate CAP proficiency testing.
  • Perform established Quality Control review of cases.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date records of Cytology Laboratory activities, maintain record in compliance with Federal, State and CAP guidelines.
  • Participate in data collection and monitoring of quality assurance monitors as determined by department and section policy and maintain appropriate records for these procedures
  • Complete Quality Assurance Investigation Logs to thoroughly document matters requiring follow-up or corrective action.
  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) functions: maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results, adhere to laboratory policy and goals in terms of accuracy and productivity
  • Interact with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person in a pleasant and helpful manner.
