About The Position

Loretto Hospital is seeking a dedicated Medical Technologist to perform clinical testing on patient specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and hospital employees across age groups. Reporting to the Administrative Director of Laboratory, the Medical Technologist uses technical and analytical skills to provide physicians with diagnostic information that supports appropriate patient care and treatment. The role emphasizes test quality, patient-centered service, collaboration across departments, and compliance with hospital and laboratory policies. The position performs testing, reviews and validates results, reports critical findings, conducts quality control and preventive maintenance, troubleshoots equipment, and participates in quality improvement and assurance activities. It also requires maintaining confidentiality and security in the Laboratory Information System, continuing professional education, courteous interactions with patients and colleagues, and participation in safety, disaster, fire, and infection-control programs. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution; alternatively, an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and at least six years of clinical laboratory experience in high-complexity testing. MLS, MT, MLT, or equivalent ASCP or AMT certification is preferred. The work involves frequent standing, walking, and handling or reaching, and lifting or moving items of varying weights.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution; alternatively, an associate degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and at least six years of clinical laboratory experience in high-complexity testing.
Ability to perform clinical laboratory testing and demonstrate technical and analytical skills for producing diagnostic information.
Ability to evaluate test results, recognize critical or abnormal findings, and follow applicable reporting and verification procedures.
Ability to perform quality control, preventive maintenance, instrument troubleshooting, and related documentation.
Ability to accurately identify, process, and report patient specimens and results within established time limits.
Ability to use the Laboratory Information System while maintaining security and patient confidentiality.
Ability to follow hospital and departmental policies, standard operating procedures, safety requirements, and infection-control practices.
Professional communication and courteous interactions with patients, the public, and employees.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including frequent standing, walking, reaching, and handling items, as well as lifting or moving up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Responsibilities

Perform clinical testing on patient specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and hospital employees across age groups.
Evaluate, review, and approve finalized patient test results in light of specimen integrity, age-specific criteria, disease status, previous results, and instrument function.
Report appropriate reference ranges and recognize, document, verify, and communicate critical, panic, abnormal, or discrepant results according to standard operating procedures.
Contact physicians when necessary to request diagnostic information or provide approved information relevant to patient care.
Perform, evaluate, and document quality control testing; investigate and resolve unacceptable results or trends, and notify appropriate laboratory leadership of issues and resolutions.
Troubleshoot instruments and equipment and independently perform and document preventive maintenance and function checks.
Identify equipment problems and supply needs related to maintenance and notify the appropriate supervisor or director.
Participate in departmental and hospital continuous quality improvement and quality assurance activities, including monitoring, documentation, data gathering, and assignments.
Participate in staff meetings and continuing education, apply hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and maintain knowledge of standard operating procedures.
Operate the Laboratory Information System for patient testing and maintain LIS security and patient-record confidentiality.
Interact courteously and professionally with patients, the public, and employees, using effective written and telephone communication.
Participate in safety, disaster, fire, and infection-control programs; identify hazards and use personal protective equipment as required.
Accurately identify specimens, process and report tests as ordered and within established time limits, follow the patient results read-back policy, and follow infection-control procedures including handwashing.
Support hospital and departmental values, promote a caring environment, and assist patients and families through diagnostic services.
Follow applicable compliance policies, codes, laws, regulations, and hospital policies.
