The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse works on the 30-bed 2 West unit, which has a patient ratio of 1:6. The unit uses wound vacs, heparin drips, suction, IV pumps, glucometers, bladder scanners, feeding pumps, and telemetry, with Editech as its documentation system. Staffing includes 2–3 technicians per shift, a clinical coordinator on varied days, a charge nurse, a manager, and a director. The role involves providing patient care and meeting the needs of patients and families, maintaining a positive attitude, performing service recovery as necessary, and escalating problems through the chain of command. Unit procedures include lab draws and IV starts. Scheduling uses block scheduling when available, though it is not guaranteed; nurses rotate every other weekend and holiday and may float between 2 North and 2 West. Navy scrubs are required; fleece and sweatshirts are not permitted.
