About The Position

This individual is primarily responsible for the performance of secretarial duties in the Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Respiratory Care Department. Primary duties include the scheduling of diagnostic examinations, management of the paper medical record for test done in the department, and secretarial assistance to Department Supervisors and Team Leads.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED required
  • A minimum of one year of experience in an office or medical setting.
  • Must demonstrate good comprehension of medical terminology.
  • Must be flexible in work schedule.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computers/word processing.
  • Must demonstrate an excellent comprehension of medical terminology.
  • Must be proficient in English grammar and punctuation.
  • Must be pleasant in nature and can communicate with people from variety of backgrounds including patients, physicians, and technical support.
  • Must be able to work under pressure due to deadlines.
  • Word processing knowledge required.
  • Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Secretary/Assistant degree/diploma preferred
  • Proficient typing skills preferred.
  • May be required to alternate shifts.
  • Experience with Word/Excel/Power Point preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules diagnostic examinations for all Cardiovascular Diagnostic/Respiratory Care Services/Sleep/Neurodiagnostic using Cerner Enterprise Scheduling.
  • Procures adequate/confidential medical histories in accordance with MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center policies/procedures, HIPAA, Local Medical Review Policy (LMRP) during the scheduling process.
  • Assures compliance regarding payable diagnoses for exams and verifies preauthorization from various insurance companies to assure maximum reimbursement and provide accurate patient care.
  • Facilitates transcription for departmental medical directors, consulting physicians, and technical directors.
  • Provides secretarial support to Supervisors and Team Leads of the department.
  • Makes copies of reports as needed and maintains filing system.
  • Maintain local office equipment and monitor appropriate supply levels/forms for office function.
  • Answers the telephone and takes messages.
  • Appropriately greets and directs patients to appropriate areas.
  • Respects confidentiality of patient/personnel information.
  • Downloads pulse oximeter data and properly cleans equipment for the next use.
  • Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
  • Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.
  • Maintains the ability to increase work hours during high department volumes and decrease work hours when volumes decrease.
  • Maintains a functioning telephone to facilitate communication with the department when needed.
