About The Position

This position involves participating in the clinical evaluation and care of patients across various settings, under the direct supervision of attending staff. Residents will perform procedures as specified by their program director, assume progressive responsibility for patient care, and communicate effectively with supervising physicians. The role also includes participating in educational and scholarly activities, teaching and supervising other residents and students, and contributing to institutional committees. Residents are expected to develop a personal learning program for professional growth and adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including the GME Policy and Procedure Manual and regulations of affiliated institutions.

Requirements

  • Medical Degree Required: Degree in Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an accredited school
  • Have successfully taken and passed USMLE/COMLEX exams parts 1& 2
  • Residents must hold a temporary license to practice medicine in the State of Illinois.
  • Residents must be certified in BLS/ACLS prior to beginning residency
  • Residents must have a current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) (if applicable)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by their discipline under the direct supervision of the attending staff.
  • Perform procedures, which are specified by each program director, under the direct supervision of attending physician.
  • Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to resident’s level of education, ability and experience.
  • Communicate effectively with their supervising attending regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis.
  • Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.
  • Participate in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Develop a personal program of learning to foster continued professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.
  • Abide by all Hospital policies and procedures, including the provisions of the GME Policy and Procedure Manual, the residency training programs and the regulations of any affiliated institution to which the resident may be assigned.
  • Residents will be taught and evaluated according to the six (6) core competencies established by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME): Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Professionalism, Practice Based Learning, Systems Based Practice and Interpersonal Communication.
  • Residents are expected to complete evaluations for each rotation that they participate in using the New Innovation software.
  • All residents will take the In-Training exam yearly.
  • Adheres to downtime procedures.
  • Adheres to established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Performs both essential and non-essential job functions in a safe manner as identified by Norwegian American Hospital.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and models the mission and core values of Norwegian American Hospital.
  • Enhances professional growth and development by accessing educational programs, job related literature, in-service meetings, and workshops/seminars.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
