About The Position

The PGY-1 Internal Medicine Resident Physician is responsible for participating in a structured graduate medical education program accredited by the ACGME. Under the supervision of attending physicians and senior residents, the resident provides direct patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings while developing clinical competency in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of adult medical conditions. The resident is expected to progressively assume responsibility for patient care consistent with training level, institutional policies, and program requirements.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Valid limited permit or medical license as required by state law.
  • Current DEA registration (if applicable).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • Successful graduation from medical school and acceptance into an accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program.
  • Knowledge of internal medicine principles and evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary staff.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Commitment to professionalism, ethical practice, and patient-centered care.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients admitted to the Internal Medicine service.
  • Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Develop differential diagnoses and treatment plans under physician supervision.
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests and laboratory studies.
  • Document patient encounters, progress notes, discharge summaries, and consultations accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in daily rounds, interdisciplinary meetings, and patient care conferences.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and participate in on-call coverage schedules.
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing staff, consultants, ancillary departments, and care management teams.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
  • Participate in ambulatory continuity clinic assignments.
  • Attend required educational conferences, lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, and quality improvement activities.
  • Comply with ACGME duty hour requirements, hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection control procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, research, and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
