About The Position

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is seeking a Part-Time, Registered Nurse 2 for its Medical Recuperative Care (MRC) program at the Transitional Housing Program (THP) in Port Orchard, WA. This role is crucial in providing care to veterans who are often disabled and receiving medical care for chronic health conditions. These clients are considered vulnerable and high-risk. The position involves educating clients, participating in care planning, and monitoring medications. The work schedule is 3 days a week, 12-15 hours per week during business hours, with flexibility for candidate availability and program needs. This position is not eligible for telework. A supplemental basic shift premium of $1.00 per hour will be provided for 24/7 Facilities from July 1, 2025, to June 29, 2027, for employees providing direct care on location. The WDVA is dedicated to "Serving Those Who Served" by connecting Veterans and their families to earned benefits and innovative programs, and by providing critical community services through its State Veterans Homes.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington state registered nurse license or unencumbered registered nurse multistate licensure.
  • One (1) year of experience with facilitating discharge plans and continuous care planning activities.
  • Proficiency in the English language (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • Ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies.
  • Must be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Must maintain a valid RN license.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
  • Must successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Must become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Candidates must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Review discharge paperwork, including treatment plans, medication lists, and diagnosis lists.
  • Collaborate with VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager to develop and implement care plans.
  • Participate in monthly and ad-hoc case review meetings.
  • Immediately report significant changes in client status, medication intake, or overall condition to VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager.
  • Modify care plans as needed based on client changes, in conjunction with VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager.
  • Submit required VA documentation to the VA Liaison.
  • Provide guidance to DVA MRC staff regarding client medical needs that impact case management.
  • Review discharge documentation to understand MRC client medication needs.
  • Review medication lists with MRC clients and provide education on medication types and administration.
  • Monitor MRC clients' medication intake.
  • Review care plans, diagnoses, and medication lists directly with MRC clients.
  • Provide general education related to care plan activities, including medication administration.
  • Provide guidance on necessary isolation protocols or special medication handling.
  • Demonstrate medication administration for new or modified medications.
  • Educate clients on prescribed medications, including dosage, frequency, storage, and administration techniques.
  • Demonstrate to MRC clients how to self-monitor and record vital signs.
  • Demonstrate the process for medication refills to MRC clients.
  • Assess clients to determine if emergency medical interventions are needed.
