The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values. This role involves instructing and encouraging coworkers to treat patients and customers courteously. The MLS performs patient tests using automated clinical laboratory equipment, reagents, and various test methodologies across Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology. They maintain competencies in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies, perform quality control, and document any corrective actions. The MLS reviews patient test results for accuracy, notifies appropriate clinical personnel of critical results, and performs instrument checks, maintenance, and troubleshooting. This position requires maintaining knowledge of healthcare changes, participating in continuing education, and recognizing abnormal test results to make appropriate decisions before releasing them. Efficient computer function, workload management, and adherence to established turnaround times are essential. The role also involves maintaining a safe work environment, handling biohazardous materials and chemicals according to protocols, and adhering to hospital and departmental policies for safety, environmental, and infection control. The MLS notifies the appropriate Laboratory section lead when stock supplies are low and may assist in the orientation and training of new employees and students, as well as competency assessment for moderate and high complexity testing.
