The Medical Laboratory Scientist demonstrates critical thinking skills and independent judgment. The MLS understands the underlying scientific principles and technical elements of laboratory testing and result interpretation, as well as technical, procedural, and problem-solving aspects of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. The MLS is capable of performing and interpreting waived, moderate, and high complexity testing, and possesses skills to perform routine phlebotomy for patients of all age groups. The MLS interprets quality control values, troubleshoots and resolves QC failures, participates in additional quality assurance activities, and operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation. The MLS recognizes procedural and technical problems, troubleshoots and takes corrective action, and notifies Supervisor/Manager/Laboratory Medical Director as appropriate. The Point of Care Coordinator facilitates and coordinates Point of Care testing activities throughout the health system by reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs. The Coordinator assists with new Point of Care tests and instruments and ensures that Point of Care testing and processes meets all applicable regulatory standards. This position serves as a liaison between Point of Care testing sites and the laboratory.
