About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II (MLS II) at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, as Testing Personnel defined by CLIA, performs waived and non-waived testing under general supervision. They follow standard operating procedures to ensure accurate results and records, requiring professional knowledge to interpret test results for diagnosis and treatment. As General Supervisor, the MLS II may oversee daily laboratory operations and personnel, including Quality Control review, staff training and competency assessment, and inventory management. Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting results, performing only authorized tests commensurate with their skills. This position does not require direct patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Laboratory Sciences.
  • Other Certificate/Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required.
  • 1-2 years of lab experience required.
  • Understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance, and repair, and analytic techniques.
  • Ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to pay careful attention to detail and adhere to written protocols.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors when issues are identified.
  • Ability to perform as a team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff, including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived and non-waived testing under general supervision.
  • Carry out all policies and perform all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures.
  • Work independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records.
  • Interpret test results accurately for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Perform day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results, as delegated.
  • Supervise assigned workstations, including Quality Control (QC) review.
  • Conduct training and competency assessment of staff.
  • Manage inventory.
  • Process specimens, perform tests, and report test results.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting and either correct them or notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
