The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in those specialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience. This role provides support to the department in areas such as quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and the completion of special projects. The MLS II performs and reports on assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring quality control requirements are met. They actively support and comply with laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results, adhering to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times. The role also involves ensuring reagents and test kits are properly dated and managing QC analysis to ensure data accuracy and proper instrument function, making quality control decisions. The MLS II is responsible for informing supervisory personnel of any issues with test procedures, reporting deviations, and entering test results into the Laboratory Information System. Maintaining laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition, completing training and competency checklists, and potentially assisting supervisors with training are also key aspects. The position adheres to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements, using personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work practice controls as directed. They may answer client questions, participate in inspections, and assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor. This is a general description of work performed, not an exhaustive list.
