A Medical Laboratory Scientist II in the Microbiology Laboratory is responsible for processing, evaluating and performing tests to identify microorganisms or antigens according to written procedures and performs susceptibilities in the Microbiology Laboratory. This role organizes and prioritizes workload, works independently, demonstrates technical expertise on various Microbiology processes, and makes critical decisions about results, QC and maintenance issues. Provides departmental support and performs additional duties or projects as assigned to assist their supervisor. Records and evaluates daily, weekly, and monthly QC in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor. Requires one to maintain safe work practices, follow all regulatory requirements, be familiar with all procedures in the department and engage supervisor, manager, or director as appropriate. Performs other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • 2 years of Clinical Laboratory experience.
  • ASCP or equivalent certification in Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT) or Microbiology (M).
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.
  • Annual TB Screening, Criminal Background Check, Substance Abuse Testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology
  • Ability to answer advanced questions about Microbiology from clinicians
  • Knowledge of UAMS testing methods

Responsibilities

  • Processing, evaluating and performing tests to identify microorganisms or antigens according to written procedures.
  • Performing susceptibilities in the Microbiology Laboratory.
  • Organizing and prioritizing workload.
  • Working independently.
  • Demonstrating technical expertise on various Microbiology processes.
  • Making critical decisions about results, QC and maintenance issues.
  • Providing departmental support and performing additional duties or projects as assigned to assist their supervisor.
  • Recording and evaluating daily, weekly, and monthly QC in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor.
  • Maintaining safe work practices.
  • Following all regulatory requirements.
  • Being familiar with all procedures in the department and engaging supervisor, manager, or director as appropriate.
  • Performing other duties as needed.
  • Able to perform blood parasite analysis.
  • Operating all equipment in the UAMS Microbiology department.
