About The Position

Essentia Health is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Assistant to support pre-analytical and post-analytical functions within Essentia Health Laboratories. The position is 28 hours per week and follows a day/evening rotation. The Medical Laboratory Assistant promotes patient safety through specimen collection and processing and performs waived laboratory testing in accordance with accreditation standards and state licensure requirements.

Requirements

• Graduate from a Medical Laboratory Assistant Program, or complete an internal Medical Laboratory Assistant training program within one year of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Recent specimen preparation and processing experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Collect specimens through venipuncture, capillary skin puncture, and collection of other specimens such as urine and swabs.
• Process and handle specimens according to testing requirements to support clinical laboratory testing.
• Perform laboratory testing, when applicable, in accordance with accreditation and licensure requirements.
• Participate in training new employees, students, and other personnel as appropriate.
• Follow Essentia Health rules and policies when handling specimens and equipment to ensure safety and quality.
