About The Position

Obtains blood fluids and excretive specimens from patients; performs testing procedures on specimens using laboratory equipment and/or reagents.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited school
  • High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License issued by the WV Department of Health
  • Three (3) months of medical laboratory technician experience.
  • Able to multitask and handle stressful situations.
  • Able to communicate effectively.
  • Able to work well as a team with other staff and patients.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Responsibilities

  • Performs test procedures on various patient specimens using laboratory equipment and/or reagents. Maintains competency in all areas where performing testing.
  • Demonstrates proper methods and procedures in operating all laboratory equipment ensuring accuracy of test results. Performs troubleshooting as needed.
  • Evaluates reliability of tests by adhering to quality control procedures in performing tests to produce accurate results.
  • Receives patient specimens/body fluids or obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures.
  • Collects, prepares/handles specimens, adhering to safety and laboratory policy, and routes them to appropriate laboratory section or to reference laboratory for all testing not performed on site.
  • Contacts/consults with technologists or supervisor when test finds are askew or when difficulties are encountered in testing.
  • Records and reports test results to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease; notifies appropriate personnel and physician of abnormal and critical results; consults with pathologist regarding interpretation of test results when necessary.
  • Attends continuing education classes, seminars and workshops to keep up-to-date on new improved procedures and techniques and equipment within the medical technology field.
  • Confirm/process/prepare patients regarding demographic information and laboratory testing utilizing LIS.
  • Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Assesses information relative to patient's status and interprets this information to identify the age specific needs of each patient.
