About The Position

The Medical Lab Technician II work with lead lab technician to provide general laboratory services with consultation to the medical staff at the North Doctor Place Clinic.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and Medical Laboratory Technician –OR- Medical Assistant Certificate and phlebotomy training and/or experience – OR - an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of: Medications, including potential side effects and interactions.
  • Ability to: Recognize symptoms and provide recommendations within scope of practice.
  • Administer prescribed treatments, perform procedures, and carry out tasks ordered by providers within scope of practice.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to situations that may arise. Ability to adjust actions in order to provide patient centered care.
  • Adapt to rapidly changing situations.
  • Use effective written and oral communication skills to explain complex medical issues, work with team members and providers, and discuss difficult or sensitive issues. Ability to listen and understand complex information.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy on a daily basis. Utilizes proper collection technique and look up specimen collection requirements as needed.
  • Uses 2 patient identifiers to verify correct patient is selected.
  • Performs routine and specialized tests utilizing manufacturer’s instructions for use and reference lab guidelines.
  • Reports test results and consult with providers on additional tests that may be useful or necessary to clarify problems.
  • Works with lead lab technician to ensure quality control procedures are completed on equipment and products as recommended by manufacturer’s instructions for use and Lab policies.
  • Works with lead lab technician to ensure external proficiency testing is completed and reported.
  • Works with lead lab technician to ensure preventive maintenance is completed for all instruments. Calibrates or standardizes equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and makes simple repairs or identifies need for external services as instructed by lead lab technician.
  • Ensures lab results received into EMR on a daily basis.
  • Performs daily terminal cleaning and follows all infection control guidelines.
  • Ensures that safety practices are effectively followed.
  • Works with lead lab technician to ensure lab policies and procedures are followed and are updated to current practice standards.
  • Remains available to perform other duties within specialty or capabilities at the request of the supervisor.
