About The Position

The Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of clients under the direction of the Physician or Primary Care Provider (PCP) by performing various duties. This role involves direct client interaction, clinical support, and administrative tasks within a healthcare setting. The position requires a commitment to providing culturally sensitive services, particularly to American Indian and Alaska Native populations.

Requirements

  • Must have High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) (Level I).
  • Must have a Medical Assisting certificate from a certified program (Level II).
  • Must have three (3) years of medical assisting experience (Level II).
  • Proficient computer skills, such as keyboard, electronic mail, word processing, etc.
  • Able to learn an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the provision of culturally sensitive counseling services to American Indians.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and comply with HIPAA and other regulations concerning client confidentiality.
  • Greet clients in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Attempt to deescalate any client complaint and engage supervisor promptly as needed.
  • Identify clients using at least two identifiers at every encounter.
  • Interview clients, obtain vital signs and relevant history, and record information in clients' records.
  • Prepare clients according to needs.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examination of clients.
  • Prepare equipment for appointment according to client / provider needs.
  • Understand and use sterile technique when needed.
  • Assist Medical Providers in all established procedures performed in the clinical setting.
  • Operate/perform equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Read and interpret pediatric periodicity charts.
  • Review, reconcile, and administer immunizations in accordance with the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices (ACIP).
  • Perform specific injections (intramuscular and subcutaneous) and treatments as defined by clinic Policies and Procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms and work areas in accordance with clinic policies.
  • Responsible for the care, cleaning and necessary sterilization of all equipment and instruments used in accordance with clinic Policy and Procedure.
  • Report deficits or low inventory of supplies to appropriate personnel.
  • Provide guidance for clients to designated areas for labs and referrals.
  • Enter and retrieve data from the Electronic Health Record (EHR), including health summaries, vital signs, allergies, chief complaints, review of systems, and other needed information.
  • Answer the phone in a courteous and friendly manner, take accurate messages, document appropriately and/or deliver messages to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with clinic staff to facilitate efficient client flow and meet client needs.
  • Communicate any emergency immediately to appropriate medical staff and initiate calling of codes as appropriate.
  • Maintain positive, effective, and respectful working relationship with peers.
  • Attend department meetings and other assigned meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain a professional, organized, and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and wear appropriate work attire.
  • Participate in Tele-Health visits as needed.
  • Willing to learn more about the American Indian culture and attend at least one Cultural Presentation/Training per year.
  • Willing to work with American Indian/Alaska Native people and demonstrate cultural awareness and humility.
  • Willing to deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Adhere to accreditation and compliance standards/guidelines.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Must have a Medical Assistant certification (Level II).
  • Capable of functioning independently at satellite sites (Level II).
  • Fully oriented to and capable of functioning as a Front Office Assistant independently (Level II).
  • Assist in orientation and training for new staff and training of current staff (Level II).
  • Assist in development of departmental policies, procedures, and quality improvement activities as directed (Level II).
  • Lead and/or facilitate projects or initiatives to improve clinical workflow (Level II).
  • Participate in standing or ad hoc committees (Level II).
  • Seek out leadership training opportunities (Level II).
  • Lead one educational in-service per calendar year (Level II).
