About The Position

The Medical Director plays a critical leadership role within Thresholds and reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer. This position provides strategic, clinical, and administrative oversight of psychiatric services across the organization. The Medical Director ensures that all psychiatric care meets the highest standards of quality, compliance, and member-centered practice, while advancing Thresholds’ mission and guiding a team of physicians, psychiatric practitioners, and care coordination staff.

Requirements

  • A Doctor of Medicine Degree
  • A Doctor of Osteopathy Degree
  • Current State of Illinois Medical License.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a comprehensive system for delivering psychiatric services to eligible members.
  • Develop and uphold standards for quality of care and medical documentation.
  • Establish and maintain adequate psychiatric staffing levels across programs.
  • Provide timely and accurate updates to Thresholds leadership and consult with psychiatric staff as needed.
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate physicians, residents, and medical students; oversee peer review and credentialing processes.
  • Lead and support the Nurse Care Coordination team.
  • Participate in organizational committees including Compliance, High Risk, and CQI activities.
  • Develop and manage the Medical Leadership department budget.
  • Serve as a clinical consultant on high-risk cases, adverse events, and program-level clinical questions; conduct critical incident reviews as needed.
  • Participate in developing and reviewing psychiatric policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Support collaboration with PCPs, FQHCs, and external healthcare partners.
  • Engage in agency initiatives involving medication policy and physical health integration.
  • Contribute to grant writing, publications, reports, and represent the agency in meetings, conferences, and trainings.
  • Be available to senior administrative staff on a 24/7 basis for urgent consultation.
  • Act as liaison to consultants in public health, emergency care, and infectious disease.
  • Provide medical guidance on new programs and lines of business.
  • Manage recovery-oriented psychiatric care to assigned members, including evaluation and medication management.
  • Partner with program staff to address members’ medical and physical health needs.
  • Provide clinically appropriate communication to members, families, and staff, in compliance with all confidentiality laws and standards.
  • Deliver feedback to program leadership on staff performance and program operations; report unethical or substandard care when identified.
  • Maintain timely and accurate physician notes that meet professional documentation standards.
  • Serve as a collaborating physician for psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) as needed.
  • Support the work of the Training Department and Research Department.
  • Participate in agency-sponsored research and present findings as appropriate.
  • Present at local, state, and national conferences or provide internal agency training.
