About The Position

At Upstate Veterinary Specialties, we’re looking for an experienced and inspiring Medical Director to help lead our hospital into its next chapter of clinical excellence. This is a unique opportunity for a collaborative veterinary leader to influence medicine, mentor exceptional doctors, and drive operational excellence in a privately owned, growing specialty and emergency hospital where innovation and compassion go hand in hand. As Medical Director, you’ll partner closely with hospital leadership and Chiefs of Service to shape the daily clinical experience for our teams, patients, and clients. This is more than a leadership role—it’s a chance to lead and support a talented, multidisciplinary team of specialists and emergency clinicians, influence hospital-wide medical standards, workflows, and patient safety initiatives, mentor and develop veterinarians while fostering a positive, collaborative culture, serve as a key voice in strategic and operational decision-making, and help drive continuous improvement in a fast-paced, advanced referral environment.

Requirements

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree
  • 5+ years in a 24-hour specialty and emergency referral hospital
  • 5+ years of veterinary leadership experience
  • Internship training or equivalent experience required
  • Strong clinical judgment and operational mindset
  • Experience leading teams, improving workflows, and managing change
  • A collaborative, solutions-focused leadership style grounded in compassion and accountability

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day medical operations across specialty and emergency services
  • Support high-quality, consistent patient care and efficient clinical workflows
  • Partner with Chiefs of Service and leadership to optimize coverage, caseload distribution, and service coordination
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, staffing, and resource utilization
  • Coach, mentor, and support Chiefs of Service and Associate Veterinarians
  • Guide performance management, onboarding, development, and conflict resolution
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and lifelong learning
  • Help ensure strong doctor scheduling and sustainable workloads across a 24/7 hospital
  • Support patient safety and quality improvement efforts
  • Help implement medical protocols, technologies, and hospital initiatives
  • Serve as a bridge between frontline clinicians and executive leadership
  • Partner across departments to strengthen communication and elevate the client and patient experience
