The Inpatient Medical Coder under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts for the purpose of appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics and compliance to federal and state regulations in accordance with established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems. This role involves analyzing inpatient cases, identifying and assigning ICD-10 diagnostic and PCS procedural codes, and ensuring accurate MS-DRG MCC/CC and APR-DRG/SOI/ROM and POA assignments. The coder will utilize critical thinking to analyze documentation issues, consult with medical staff and clinical documentation specialists, and send coding queries to providers. They will monitor assigned work daily to facilitate the billing process within established timeframes, maintain a high level of accuracy to prevent claim denials and billing errors, and review medical records to extract pertinent information. Communication with various hospital departments regarding billing and registration issues is also a key responsibility, along with adhering to AHIMA standards of ethical coding and HIPAA privacy regulations. The position requires the use of coding references, software tools, and electronic health records (EHR), as well as participation in ongoing education, training, and certification programs. The coder will also participate in meetings related to DRG mismatches and demonstrate support for the Luminis Health Medical System's mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, and policies. Other duties or projects assigned by the manager will also be performed.
