About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a multi-skilled clinical professional responsible for providing indirect and/or direct patient care within their scope of practice, aligning with standards of excellence and quality. Under the provider's direction, the MA contributes to addressing the patient's chief complaint by taking vital signs (respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documenting patient/family needs, participating in care planning and implementation, and administering ordered medications (oral, injection, topical, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines. The role also involves understanding and adhering to legal responsibilities, identifying significant changes in patient condition, troubleshooting issues, escalating problems, and demonstrating standards of excellence in all interactions. The MA will prepare patients for physician examinations, record medical history and vital statistics, administer medications, collect and prepare laboratory specimens, provide prescription information, explain treatment procedures, clean and sterilize instruments, perform routine laboratory tests, and handle general office duties. Successfully completing skills or competency checklists is essential for assisting physicians with examinations and treatments.

Requirements

  • High School/GED (required)
  • Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program (required within 30 days employment)
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required within 12 months of start date): Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals
  • If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)

Responsibilities

  • Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
  • Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoots issues and escalates problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
  • Maintains clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
  • Successfully completes skills or competency checklists to be able to help physicians examine and treat patients, performing such tasks as handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, changing dressings on wounds.
