About The Position

This role is for a Medical Assistant in an OBGYN setting. The primary duties involve direct patient care, including preparing patients for exams, collecting histories, assisting with procedures, patient education, and charting. The position also includes clerical tasks such as managing medical records, scheduling appointments, and verifying insurance. Environmental responsibilities include maintaining a clean and infection-controlled environment, managing supplies, and sterilizing equipment. Organizational duties involve respecting patient rights and reporting issues to supervisors. Clinical responsibilities are broad and may include asepsis, vital signs, assisting with minor surgeries, wound care, laboratory procedures (following OSHA and CLIA-waived testing guidelines), specimen handling, and performing EKGs. Lead responsibilities include assisting the Medical Office Manager with staffing, training, supervision, and delegation, and potentially serving as the EMR Tech. Additional duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Medical Assistant certification or equivalent (implied by title and duties)
  • Adherence to MA scope of practice in the laboratory
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines
  • Experience with CLIA-waived testing
  • Proficiency in specimen handling (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum)
  • Experience with electrocardiography
  • Ability to perform venipunctures and capillary punctures
  • Familiarity with medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, and autoclaving
  • Ability to check vital signs and perform mensuration
  • Experience assisting with minor surgeries and post-surgical care
  • Ability to apply dressings and remove sutures
  • Experience with biohazard waste disposal
  • Skills in patient education regarding assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care
  • Proficiency in charting and maintaining patient records
  • Experience with scheduling appointments and verifying insurance
  • Ability to maintain a clean and infection-controlled environment
  • Experience ordering and managing medical supplies

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam rooms, assisting with preparation for exams, collecting patient history, performing screenings, assisting physicians/nurses with procedures, charting, relaying instructions, and answering calls.
  • Provide safe, accurate, and clinically competent direct patient care.
  • Identify and provide patient education on wellness or illness.
  • Communicate information to other members of the health care team.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities including managing patient medical records, obtaining reports, completing forms, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, and updating charts.
  • Fulfill environmental responsibilities including setting up instruments and equipment, cleaning exam/procedure rooms and equipment, maintaining infection control, cleaning sterilizers, ordering and storing supplies, and restocking rooms.
  • Fulfill organizational responsibilities including respecting patient rights, sharing problems with supervisors, recognizing and responding to patient abnormalities or urgent problems, and responding to emergency codes.
  • Fulfill clinical medical assisting responsibilities as per state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping, autoclaving, checking vital signs, physical examination preparations, clinical pharmacology, drug administration (including injections), prescription verifications, minor surgery assistance, applying dressings, suture removal, biohazard waste disposal, therapeutic modalities, instructing patients with assistive devices and home care, laboratory procedures (following OSHA guidelines, quality control, CLIA-waived testing), specimen handling, and electrocardiography.
  • Adhere to the Medical Assistant scope of practice in the laboratory.
  • Assist the Medical Office Manager with staffing, training, supervising, and delegating assignments.
  • Serve as the office’s EMR Tech (potentially).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
