About The Position

The Medical Assistant provides clinical, patient care, front-office, and administrative support to healthcare providers within the Student Health Center. Under established clinical protocols and the direction of licensed healthcare providers, the Medical Assistant assists with patient intake, obtains and documents vital signs and relevant medical information, prepares patients for examination and treatment, supports clinical procedures and patient flow, maintains clinical supplies and records, and assists with referrals and follow-up care. The position also supports appointment scheduling, walk-in services, front office operations, and health promotion activities. The Medical Assistant maintains strict confidentiality and performs all duties in accordance with University policies and applicable state and federal requirements.

Requirements

  • Medical Assistant certification from an accredited vocational institution.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Demonstrated tact and diplomacy with the ability to work with confidential information.
  • Knowledge of health promotion principles and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with all members of the student health services team and provide services to a diverse group of individuals.
  • Strong ability to make responsible decisions in compliance with health care and University Student Health Center policies and protocol’s.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to understand and abide by Federal regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with diverse parent and student populations and demonstrate sensitivity to their individual needs.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and technology.
  • Ability to learn and interpret university policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and prepare them for examination, evaluation, and treatment.
  • Interview patients regarding the reason for visit and obtain and document relevant medical history.
  • Obtain, measure, and document vital signs and other patient information in the medical record.
  • Assist physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other licensed healthcare providers during examinations and clinical procedures.
  • Administer medications and injections as authorized and directed by licensed healthcare providers and in accordance with applicable scope-of-practice requirements and Student Health Center protocols.
  • Collect and prepare specimens and perform authorized point-of-care testing according to established procedures.
  • Assist with wound care, dressing changes, and other clinical procedures under appropriate provider direction.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms and appropriately clean and disinfect clinical areas and equipment between patients.
  • Follow infection-prevention, bloodborne-pathogen, sharps-safety, and other clinical safety protocols.
  • Monitor and maintain clinical and pharmaceutical supplies, including appropriate documentation of medication use and inventory.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition or situations requiring immediate clinical attention and promptly notify the appropriate licensed healthcare provider.
  • Reinforce patient-care instructions and health education provided by licensed healthcare professionals.
  • Facilitate referrals, laboratory follow-up, and other continuity-of-care activities as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Greet and check in students seeking medical services and assist with patient flow throughout the Student Health Center.
  • Schedule, confirm, and coordinate appointments and accommodate walk-in patients according to established procedures.
  • Verify and update demographic, contact, and other required patient information.
  • Respond to telephone, electronic, and in-person inquiries and appropriately route clinical questions to licensed healthcare providers.
  • Assist students in navigating Student Health Center services and accessing appropriate internal and external resources.
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patient information and records in accordance with University policies and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents when appropriately authorized, healthcare providers, and University departments.
  • Support healthcare providers and the Front Office Manager in the daily operation of the Student Health Center.
  • Maintain examination rooms, clinical equipment, medical supplies, and inventory to support safe and efficient patient care.
  • Maintain required clinical, pharmaceutical, laboratory, and operational documentation.
  • Coordinate referrals to outside healthcare and social-service providers as directed.
  • Assist with health-promotion, prevention, and wellness initiatives for the University community.
  • Participate in emergency-response activities within the individual’s training and assigned responsibilities, including CPR when indicated.
  • Follow Student Health Center policies, clinical protocols, infection-control procedures, and University safety requirements.
