About The Position

Under the supervision of clinic leadership (clinic manager, MA Supervisor), the Medical Assistant provides health care in the clinic and performs related work as assigned. The primary goal is to support Elk Ridge’s Mission of providing comprehensive, quality health care that is affordable and accessible to all who may have healthcare needs, by successfully performing the primary essential functions. The Medical Assistant assists clinic health care providers in providing direct patient care, including rooming patients, obtaining vitals, gathering patient history and reason for seeking care. They maintain strict confidentiality and assist with Telehealth appointments. The role involves assisting with the registration of clinic patients and completing EHR data entry, gathering vital signs, and performing other clinical duties such as drawing blood, wound care, suture/staple removal, electrocardiograms, and ear lavage. The Medical Assistant collects, prepares, and sends laboratory specimens, administers medications and immunizations, and instructs patients on follow-up procedures. They also manage medication refill requests, recognize and respond to urgent/emergent situations, perform basic triage, and maintain documentation of immunizations. Maintaining supply stock, checking medication/supply dates, and cleaning examination tables are also key responsibilities. Adherence to Elk Ridge work practices, including the Occupational Exposure Plan Policy, MSDS, and safety plan, is required. The Medical Assistant anticipates provider's needs, assists with patient education, and sets up/cleans medical equipment. They perform laboratory procedures, maintain a clean workspace, and assist with the referral process, including prior authorizations for home health and DME equipment. Collaboration with other Elk Ridge team members is expected. Participation in meetings, maintaining current certification, effective communication in English, adherence to policies and procedures, multi-tasking, coping with job stress, and participating in training new staff are also part of the role. The position models professional clinical standards and behaviors, requires regular and predictable attendance, continuous learning, and consistent review of company email. Joint Commission Responsibilities include maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment and demonstrating proficiency with compliance and reporting requirements for Joint Commission Certification (JCC) standards. Other duties include representing Elk Ridge Community Health professionally, participating in community events, supporting cost-effective use of resources, accurately documenting hours worked, and maintaining skills proficiency with operating systems and software programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Or G.E.D
  • Medical Assistant Certificate from an approved and accredited educational institution
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers
  • Level I fingerprint clearance card: current valid and in good standing or have applied for it within seven working days after beginning employment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English language in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.

Responsibilities

  • Assists clinic health care providers in providing direct patient care, by rooming patients, obtaining vitals, gathering patient history and reason for seeking care.

  • Gathers necessary vital signs from patients and completes entry in EHR for physician's review and entry into patient's chart.
  • Performs other clinical duties such as drawing blood, wound care and dressing changes; removing sutures and staples; electrocardiograms; and ear lavage.
  • Collects, prepares, and sends laboratory specimens for routine tests and records results under direct supervision of the provider.
  • Administers selected medication and treatments to patients as ordered, including injections and immunizations and instructs patients on proper follow-up procedures under the supervision of the provider.
  • Enters medication refill requests for provider review and approval.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocol; perform basic triage per specific office protocol procedures; document work processes as required.
  • Maintains documentation of immunizations in EMR chart and the ASIIS Website.
  • Maintains the supply stock in exam rooms and lab areas and documents usage so supplies may be replenished.
  • Checks dates on all medications and supplies daily.
  • Cleans examination tables between patients and at close of business day.
  • Adheres to Elk Ridge work practices in the Occupational Exposure Plan Policy, MSDS and safety plan.
  • Anticipates provider's needs related to patient care.
  • Assist the provider with patient education pertaining to the patient's ongoing health care: results of lab and x-ray reports; diet and exercise; laboratory and radiology preparation.
  • Sets up and cleans medical equipment and keeps red bags emptied and prepared for pickup.
  • Performs laboratory procedures provided by the center under direct supervision of the provider.
  • Keeps own workspace clean and tidy, and, as a team member, assures cleanliness of common use areas.
  • Carries out the referral process for patients as requested.
  • Handles prior authorizations for home health and DME equipment.
  • Assists other Elk Ridge team members, from all departments, when needed.
  • Participates in meetings as required.
  • Maintains current certification through CEUs or exam.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English language in person, by phone, and in writing.
