About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) works within the administration’s predefined scope-of-practice guidelines for the state where they practice. In the ambulatory care setting, the MA collects subjective and objective health-status data from patients or caregivers and communicates it to the health care provider. Under a provider’s direction, the MA contributes data to licensed health care professionals and follows through on the patient’s plan of care. The MA communicates specifically defined written care instructions from the provider to the patient or caregiver. The role supports patients across the lifespan through preventive care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as they move between care settings. Duties are performed under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine and include obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing and reporting signs or symptoms, and performing point-of-care testing.
