Requirements

  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program required. Program must include an externship/preceptorship in a clinical setting OR must have 6 months of current experience working in the capacity of a medical assistant.
  • Currently enrolled in a nursing program with half of nursing courses completed required. Transcripts must be provided indicating classes have been passed.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures required.
  • Skill to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Skill to proficiently type information into the computer to capture or detail information quickly.
  • Ability to provide caring patient care services when talking with patients and their family members.
  • Ability to critically listen to questions from patients and information from providers to convey information effectively.
  • Ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve problems before they occur and avoid bigger problems in the future.
  • Ability to problem solve during several daily activities which includes the ability to be flexible.
  • Ability to learn and proficiently navigate through computer programs that contain patient information.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for positive interaction with providers, staff and patients required.
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions/directions required.
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) understanding.

Nice To Haves

  • 6 months previous medical assistant experience preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Medication Aide Registry (MAR or MAR.40) required within 2 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Registers patients for appointments by collecting and verifying patient demographics, insurance information, and other essential information to ensure accurate information is maintained for each patient.
  • Greets, directs, and assists patients with questions to facilitate patient care in prompt and polite manner.
  • Answers telephone to schedule appointments, take messages, direct calls to appropriate personnel, and handle other patient matters to ensure excellent customer service is provided within a timely manner and according to policies and procedures.
  • Prepares records for office visits by reviewing EMR (Electronic Medical Record)/chart contents to accelerate patient care.
  • Handles insurance inquires by answering questions, assisting with referrals, and completing appropriate paperwork to ensure exam charges are submitted to insurance within a timely manner.
  • Processes and distributes written communication and documents (forms, letters, mail) accurately.
  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the patient to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the “Population Specific Criteria.”
  • Translates medical related information, issues, and concerns between the medical staff and the patient.
