About The Position

Under the direction of the Clinical Services & Case Management Division Director, the Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to nursing and medical staff in the clinic-based divisions within the Department of Health to include medical testing, treatment, and immunizations. This position is Covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required
One year Medical Assisting experience preferred
Strong Medical Assisting Skills including phlebotomy, immunizations, vital sign collection, health history intake collection, specimen collection/preparation, injections, and Medical Terminology knowledge
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent customer service skills and attention to detail
Ability to use Microsoft Office, the Department’s electronic medical record (EMR) and other job-related computer software
Math and computation skills necessary for fees collection and balancing operations when assisting in administration area.
Knowledge of infection prevention and control

Nice To Haves

Associates Degree or Certification Program of comparable length in Medical Assisting is preferred
Certified Medical Assistant preferred
CPR and TB Skin testing within three months of hire
National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification upon employment as required for all public health staff

Responsibilities

Administers public health testing which may include specimen collection, preparation and shipment of blood, sputum, urine, oral swab and other bodily exudate per Medical Director/Health Commissioner standing orders. Testing includes, but is not limited to, Tuberculosis (TB), HIV, parasites, STIs, lead and nutritional screening.
Administers appropriate medication treatment, both oral and intramuscular, as well as immunizations to children and adults. Follows all medical standing orders for any medication, injection or immunization.
Responsible for providing excellent customer service and care both in person and on the phone for all Health Department Clinics, and cross-trained and able to rotate as needed among all clinics within the Department.
Ensures rooms are ready for and between patients as directed.
Obtains client vital signs, body mass index and health history review.
Responsible for electronic medical record (EMR) entry management including, but not limited to, scanning and indexing health records, data entry into Athena patient charts, CHIRP (Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program), any local spreadsheets, and any external State-required databases or portals for patient records or data.
Educates clients regarding the prevention of communicable diseases and vaccination information as appropriate.
Assists with the education of any interns/externs as appropriate.
Responsible for practicing all appropriate infection control measures during the performance of duties.
Cross trains as appropriate or directed to assist with front office administration assistant duties during times of short-staffing or need, to include collection of fees, patient registration, scheduling and associated duties.
Assists with inventory management of clinic supplies and medications.
Assists at emergency events as needed.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
