A member of the Nephrology team, this Medical Assistant supports care for people experiencing renal (kidney) issues or at risk of developing kidney-related problems. Under the direction of clinicians, the position provides delegated direct patient care, collects and records data during office visits, measures vital signs, coordinates tests and services, and performs point-of-care testing and/or phlebotomy as indicated. The Medical Assistant helps maintain efficient workflows and a clean, pleasing physical environment that promotes safe, quality, patient-centered care. Independent clinical decision-making is outside the scope of the position; clinical questions must be referred to a provider or nurse. The role implements care plans in coordination with an interdisciplinary care team, communicates relevant patient information, promotes infection prevention, and assists with activities of daily living and patient measurements. Care is guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and includes respectful, ethical, effective communication and advocacy. The position also supports new Medical Assistants and students, participates in ongoing learning, and uses appropriate resources to provide safe, effective, evidence-based care. This is a patient-facing, on-site position working 40 hours per week on the first shift. It has no supervisory or budget responsibility.
