About The Position

The Medical Assistant will provide nursing care within the Health Services Department at the Federal Prison Center-Alderson. This role involves taking patient histories, recording vital signs, scanning information, making appointments, and assisting Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and physicians in various clinical activities. Responsibilities include drawing blood, collecting and processing laboratory tests, operating medical equipment like EKG machines, and assisting with patient flow in different clinics. The Medical Assistant will also help in the urgent care room, manage medical records, perform screening eye exams, and assist in minor surgical cases. Additionally, the role involves maintaining daily sick call lists, managing medical trip paperwork, monitoring appointments and hospitalizations, and processing escorted trip authorizations. Knowledge of the BEMR system is required.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must have completed a Medical Assistant course of study – completion diploma is required.
  • Member of a national association – The American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, and other related organizations.
  • A minimum of one (2) year of experience.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.

Responsibilities

  • Providing nursing care to include taking and recording patient history, vital signs, scanning, making appointments, assisting PA's/NP'S/RN'S and physicians in clinical activities.
  • Drawing blood from patients for analysis or other medical tests, and glucose sticks.
  • Collecting and processing laboratory tests.
  • Operating the EKG machines and other special medical apparatus and equipment within the Health Services Department.
  • Assisting the medical providers and visiting clinical specialty consultants in the management and coordination of patient flow through the chronic care clinic, optometry, and general clinics when scheduled.
  • Assisting primary providers in the urgent care room when necessary and utilizing basic medical equipment.
  • Pulling, filing, and copying medical records while maintaining supplies in all exam rooms.
  • Screening eye exams and assisting physicians and mid-level practitioners in minor surgical cases, if needed.
  • Maintaining daily sick call list/call out.
  • Assisting, routing, and scheduling with medical trip paperwork.
  • Monitoring scheduled and unscheduled appointments and/or hospitalizations at community-based clinics and/or hospitals.
  • Processing and assembling escorted trip authorizations, emergency, and special outside medical trips on a weekly basis.
  • Ensuring that each escorted trip authorization packet is reviewed by the appropriate Bureau of Prisons staff.
  • Tracking appointments/cancellations and special instructions.
  • Knowledgeable of using the BEMR system.
