About The Position

The Dental Assistant will work at the Federal Prison Center-Alderson, Health Services Department. This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week. The role involves providing chair-side assistance to dentists during various procedures, operating radiographic equipment, performing screening exams, preparing dental instruments and treatment rooms, and maintaining patient records. The position requires adherence to specific attire guidelines suitable for a correctional environment.

Requirements

  • Must process a High School Certificate of Graduation or GED.
  • Must have specialty training from a licensed dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school. A licensed dentist and/or a dental school completion certificate is required.
  • Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety.
  • Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must pass a National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Expanded Functions Dental Assistant is recommended but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves patient records, escorts patients to the appropriate dental area, seats and prepares them for treatment, and provides dismissal and follow-up instructions.
  • Providing chair-side assistance to the dentist during restorative, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontic, and oral surgery procedures.
  • Assists the Dental Officer in restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, examinations, and emergency cases.
  • Operating radiographic equipment, demonstrating proficiency in radiographic techniques, processing films, and properly mounting them for interpretation, while demonstrating current knowledge in radiographic safety measures.
  • Performing screening exams and documenting existing conditions under a dentist's or physician's supervision.
  • Prepares dental instruments, materials, medications, treatment rooms, and equipment for procedures; passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates, and operates the aspirator.
  • Observes patient responses, provides dental health education, conducts dental screenings, and performs routine oral prophylaxis using hand and mechanical instruments.
  • Makes required entries in electronic and paper dental treatment records and prepares radiographs, including positioning patients, minimizing radiation exposure, processing images, and maintaining radiographic infection control and quality assurance.
  • Placing transitional restorations in emergency situations.
  • Taking preliminary prosthetic impressions and pouring the models.
  • Removing sutures.
  • Delivering post-surgical care for alveolitis or persistent bleeding under the supervision of a dentist.
  • Responsible for the re-cementation of fixed prosthodontic restorations under the supervision of a dentist.
  • Assisting with scheduling patients for the dental clinic via call-outs.
  • Maintaining daily statistics of the patients seen in the dental clinic.
  • Scanning of medical records and reports as needed.
