Medical Assistant - Senior
About The Position
Texas Oncology is hiring a Medical Assistant to support its Houston, Texas location. The position may be classified as Level 1, Level 2, or Senior based on the candidate’s experience. Under direct supervision, the Medical Assistant assists physicians and clinicians with patient care in a clinical environment, promotes efficient patient flow, and supports examinations and procedures. The role also performs clinic support and clerical tasks, answers phones, and helps maintain physicians’ schedules. The employee supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including its Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- For Level 1, 0–3 years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant.
- For Level 2, at least three years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant, in addition to Level 1 requirements.
- For Senior level, at least five years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant in a hospital or clinic setting, in addition to Level 1 and Level 2 requirements.
- Current BCLS certification is required within three months of hire.
- Current CPR certification is required for the Senior level.
- Some state regulations may require specific certifications to work as a Medical Assistant.
- Ability to meet the role’s physical demands, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, extensive standing and walking, and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Corrected vision and hearing to the normal range.
Nice To Haves
- Certificate of graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Certified Medical Assistant credential.
- Phlebotomy experience for Level 2.
Responsibilities
- Escort patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment rooms as appropriate.
- Record patient data before physician visits, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.
- Obtain patient records needed by the physician before treatments or procedures.
- Prepare and stock examination and treatment rooms and order supplies as needed.
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures as requested.
- Administer subcutaneous and intramuscular injections as delegated by a registered nurse or physician.
- Maintain examination and treatment room disinfection protocols.
- Answer patient telephone calls and refer them to a physician, nurse, or pharmacist as appropriate.
- Phone in prescriptions and make other patient calls as directed by physicians and registered nurses.
- Inform physicians about patient reschedules and no-shows.
- Perform administrative duties as requested, including typing, filing, faxing, chart preparation, and reception.
- Support and adhere to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
