About The Position

This dual-role position as a Medical Assistant / Patient Support Assistant in Orthopedics provides skilled front office and clinical support to the physician practice. The role serves as a liaison between the physician and patient to coordinate care, and when required, provides direct patient care by working collaboratively with the care team. Functions as a member of the patient’s ambulatory care team while delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring patient safety, privacy, and loyalty. Provides healthcare services under the direction of the Practice Manager and/or designee, and physicians throughout Endeavor Health. Responsibilities include accurate documentation in the EMR, adhering to patient confidentiality standards, obtaining/verifying medical history, medications, allergies, and reason for visit. This involves accurate collection and documentation of vital signs, preparing patients for physician visits, and utilizing standardized rooming protocols. The role also includes administering medications, performing EKGs and spirometry testing, distributing post-care directions, assisting in procedures, and maintaining cleanliness of clinical and non-clinical areas. Additional duties include assisting with prior authorizations and pre-certifications, abstracting clinical information into Epic, performing clinic inventory tracking, stocking, and auditing expiration dates. The position also involves creating and opening orders, handling incoming telephone calls, responding to EMR messages and appointment requests, following up on patient issues, confirming/updating call schedules, and completing prescription refills as per practice protocol. The role may also involve communicating test results to patients via EMR or telephone.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certification: BLS/CPR Certification for the Healthcare Provider required specifically from the American Heart Association
  • Keyboard and computer skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled front office and clinical support to the physician practice and serve as a liaison between the physician and patient to coordinate care.

  • Functions as a member of the patient’s ambulatory care team while delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring patient safety, privacy and loyalty.
  • Provide healthcare services under the direction of the Practice Manager and/or designee, and physicians throughout Endeavor Health.
  • Document accurately in the EMR and adhere to patient confidentiality standards.
  • Obtain/verify medical history, medications, allergies, reason for visit, etc.
  • Accurate collection and documentation of vital signs, prepare patients for physician visit, utilize the standardized rooming patient protocol to complete all required documentation fields including medical history, reason for visit, and questionnaires.
  • Administer medications per physician orders.
  • Perform EKGs, spirometry testing, and other office performed tests per physician orders and by following documented competencies.
  • Distribute post-care direction(s) prepared by physician to patient.
  • Assist in procedures as needed including room set up, preparation, clean up, and ensure supplies are maintained for each practitioner.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of clinical and non-clinical areas such as patient rooms and laboratory.
  • Assist with obtaining prior authorizations and pre-certifications as needed.
  • Abstract clinical information into Epic at the direction of the physician or practice manager.
  • Perform clinic inventory tracking, stocking, audit expiration dates of all patient care items.
  • Obtain medical records from organizations outside Endeavor Health.
  • Create and open orders per protocol or as directed by provider.
  • Answer all incoming telephone calls to the office and handle each as appropriate, in accordance with NorthShore telephone customer service standard.
  • Take accurate and complete messages according to protocols.
  • Provide timely responses to EMR messages and appointment requests & other In Basket messages.
  • Follow-up on patient issues as appropriate.
  • Confirm/update & distribute call schedule; notify answering service, & internal on-call system, etc.
  • Complete prescription refills as per practice protocol.
  • As directed, communicate test results & other information to patients via EMR or telephone.
