Job Summary: MA: The Medical Assistant will perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. LPN: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN.) performs duties within the scope of practice as defined by the Missouri Nurse Practice Act requiring all nursing care shall be given under the direction of a person licensed by a state regulatory board to prescribe medications and treatments or under the direction of a registered professional nurse, physician, or nurse practitioner. The LPN performs duties for the promotion of health and in the care of persons who are ill, injured, or experiencing alterations in normal health processes requiring substantial specialized skill, judgment, and knowledge in accordance with JVH Policy and Procedure.

Requirements

  • MA: 1-3 years relevant clinical experience or current valid medical assistant credentials.
  • MA: Basic Life Support (BLS) required, must obtain within first 90 days of employment.
  • LPN: Graduation from LPN program and current, unrestricted MO LPN license.
  • LPN: Basic Life Support (BLS) required, must obtain within first 90 days of employment.
  • LPN: Must be IV Certified.

Nice To Haves

  • MA: Graduation from a medical assistant program.
  • LPN: Minimum of one year nursing experience in a Clinic setting
  • LPN: Community health nursing experience

Responsibilities

  • Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Utilize nursing knowledge and skills in the safe implantation of basic preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative nursing care of assigned patient/family as evidenced by documentation and observation of positive patient care outcomes.
  • Perform delegated nursing functions using established procedures, policies, guidelines, and standards as observed by the registered nurse.
  • Contributes to the development of the patient/significant other plan of care based on the identified patient problems/needs.
  • Assists in data collection on the EMR.
  • Carries out physician orders accurately, directly, and indirectly.
  • Assists in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the nursing care administered relative to the patient/significant other identified problems/needs.
  • Documents pertinent observation and intervention on appropriate record.
  • Performs selected tasks related to patient care and the patient’s environment in a safe manner.
  • Administers medication accurately, observing patient response, as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and lack of negative outcomes.
  • Maintain and coordinate communication among patient, staff, and physician as evidenced within medical record, client, and health care team feedback.
  • Assists in assuring that effective communication exists with the patient/significant other as reflected in the plan of care.
  • Effectively communicate patient’s changing needs and plans of care among staff members.
  • Report patient needs/programs and observations regarding patient’s condition to the physician.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team in coordination of the patient’s care as evidenced by other department feedback.
  • Participates in staff development programs.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and is responsible for information discussed.
  • Assists patients, family members, or other clients with concern and empathy; respects their confidentiality and privacy and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Answers and refers telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications as facilitated.
  • Assists in the orientation/training of new Team Members.
  • Consistently works in a positive and cooperative manner with fellow Team Members.
  • Assists other Team Members in the performance of their assignments.
  • Takes direction and initiate actions (cross/additional training) that will allow the assumption of cross-functional duties to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary within the Clinic.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
  • Consistently evaluates work and determines if further steps are needed to meet client expectations.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Consistently demonstrates ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
  • Minimizes non-productive time and fills slow periods with activities that enables preparation to meet the future needs of the Clinic (education, organizing, housekeeping, assisting others.)
  • Organizes job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frames.
  • Consistently demonstrates ability to take the initiative to make decisions/choices without direct supervision.
  • All other duties as assigned.
