The position requires reviewing and updating health records, measuring vital signs, preparing treatment rooms, and assisting with patient examinations and procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for patient care under the direction of the Physician, observing, recording, and reporting patient responses to medical care. The Certified Medical Assistant works closely with the primary care physician, preparing and reviewing patient charts, measuring vital signs, and performing clerical duties.

Requirements

  • Active state Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure or LPN applicant
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
  • High School Degree or GED
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required within 12 months of start date): Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina)
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to all ages of the patients
  • Ability to learn and use a computer-based patient appointment scheduling and registration system
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a team
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organization skills
  • Possesses problem-solving skills, basic computer skills, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Engage with staff and patients in a professional manner

Nice To Haves

  • One year of clinical patient care experience
  • One year of medical assistant healthcare experience
  • Two years of clerical experience in a physician’s office

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members in meeting patient/family needs
  • Implements the plan of care by providing direct basic nursing care in accordance with the LPN scope of practice
  • Appropriately labels and packages specimens, as trained
  • Assists in providing indirect care through various clerical or administrative duties as assigned by the registered nurse
  • Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested
  • Assists provider with procedures, treatments, and interventions
  • Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner
  • Prepares & reviews patient charts for upcoming visits by verifying that all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records are correct and up to date
  • Measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height
  • Performs departmental-related clerical duties such as checking inventory, stock supplies, track referrals, and answer phones as needed
  • Must possess the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly
