About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus Plaza (Jefferson Street Building) is seeking to hire a 100% Medical Assistant II to join our General Surgery Clinic. This position is responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic by interacting with patients, families, and staff. The Medical Assistant II will assist in clinic with physical examinations and related treatments, including patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations. They will manage internal and external medical records, administer routine medications, perform routine laboratory tests, electrocardiograms, and x-ray work as needed. The role also involves identifying vaccination needs, performing clerical tasks such as answering phones and scheduling appointments, and assisting in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.

Requirements

  • Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, or Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
  • Knowledge of medical records documentation requirements.
  • Knowledge of medical instruments and supplies.
  • Knowledge of routine oral, rectal, and injectable medications.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform CPR and emergency care procedures.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain a courteous and respectful approach toward patients, visitors, and fellow staff members.
  • Ability to work safely and willingness to comply with special safety and health precautions including universal precautions.
  • Ability to provide care regarding patient condition and age.
  • Ability to use supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Ability to maintain personal appearance in accordance with dress code.
  • Ability to be punctual, dependable, and flexible.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and guidelines and to read data indicators.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Assisting in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Managing internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administering routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment (medications that can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program).
  • Performing routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work, doing electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
  • Identifying vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Performing related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Assisting in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.
