About The Position

South Louisiana Community College is seeking a Medical Assistant Faculty member for a 9-month appointment. This role involves teaching and direct instructional activities, leadership to students, department, division, or college, and research and professional development. The faculty member will be responsible for preparing course materials, presenting courses, maintaining the class management system, providing feedback to students, and administering assessments. Additionally, the role includes institutional service, community service, student services, and engaging in professional development activities such as attending seminars, workshops, and pursuing continuing education. The faculty member's domicile is subject to change based on enrollment needs, and they may be required to teach on multiple campuses and in various formats (evenings, online, virtual, face to face, laboratory, clinical, hybrid, and dual enrolled).

Requirements

  • Certification as a Clinical Medical Assistant, or related healthcare licensures such as Registered or Practical Nurse
  • Relevant diploma or certificate in related fields (Medical, Healthcare, or Science related degree) with four years of occupational experience
  • OR Associate degree in the field and three (3) years of occupational experience
  • OR Baccalaureate degree in the field and at least two (2) years of directly related occupational experience.
  • Passing pre-employment criminal background and drug screen is required.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of Course Materials: Develop course syllabus aligned to the master syllabus, publish syllabus and course in LMS, develop course schedule/outline, utilize current pedagogical practices and materials, send welcome letter to students, hold office hours, adhere to LMS requirements and College Requirement Guidelines.
  • Course Presentation: Create an equitable and respectful learning environment, maintain class management system, provide necessary resources for students, start and end class on time, achieve satisfactory scores on Classroom Observation and Student Rating for Instruction, provide fair and timely grading, administer required assessments, return/acknowledge course emails within 48-72 hours, provide alternative assignments for missed class time, display professional demeanor and tone, encourage student participation, provide adequate and constructive feedback on assessments, compute grades accurately and fairly, utilize and apply assessment methods in accordance with master syllabus, department/program outcomes, and course syllabus.
  • Institutional Service: Maintain required office hours, meet with students in a timely fashion, provide accommodations for meetings outside office hours, serve and participate on college assigned committees, follow policies and procedures of the college/unit/division/department and accreditation body, follow college dress code, attend/complete required trainings and meetings, provide notice for missed commitments, attend at least one faculty senate meeting, attend and participate in advisory/program/accreditation meetings, work collaboratively with others.
  • Community Service: Represent the college positively in outreach activities, participate in 2 or more outreach activities or offer long term uncompensated academic expertise, or serve on a Local, State or National Board in their discipline.
  • Student Services: Assist students with advising via in-person and online appointments, be accessible for students, post advising messages within 48 hours, attend required advising trainings, respond to advising requests within 72 hours, provide flexible options for meeting students, use Starfish for appointments and correspondence, participate in a student-focused activity or workshop once a year.
  • Developing/Maintaining Professional Relationships: Attend seminars, webinars, lectures, or workshops, belong to a professional organization, make and record monthly industry visits (if applicable), attend and participate in semi-annual program advisory meetings (if applicable).
  • Continuing Education: Pursue or acquire advanced degrees, certifications, etc., maintain continuing education associated with licensing and/or regulatory grant proposals, participate in a Leadership Academy.
  • Publishing/Writing Activities: Review of textbook or article, creative work or performance, submission of a grant, judge/jury local or regional competition, exhibition or performance of a body of work, featured or keynote speaker, implementing and maintaining a grant, judge/jury state or national competition.
  • Research Activities: Complete research and compose successful grant proposal as primary investigator, research for a state or national committee or group, ongoing research agenda for publication.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Faculty may be required to teach on multiple campuses, and course times and formats are based on college need. Duties are subject to change depending on college, student, or department needs.
